I'm assuming it's a multiverse effect, ie: someone traveling back in time to the future and altering a tiny aspect of history, ie: replacing the letter "p" with an arbitrary symbol, or a combination of lines and dots, ie: "ie". So this ieerson in no certain terms ceases to exist in our current universe because the ramifications of this relatively small change in history creates a cascading series of events that change the future exieonentially.
